Pain positioned in the neck is a normal medical condition. Pain in neck can occur from numerous disorders and diseases of certain tissues in the neck, such as pinched nerve, herniated disc, whiplash, neck strain and degenerative disc disease. Pain in neck is also called as cervical pain. Pain in neck is generally associated with insensitive aching. Certain times neck pain is diminished with movement of the neck. Other symptoms connected with certain forms of neck pain include gland swelling, lightheadedness or dizziness, swishing sounds in the head, pulsations, difficulty swallowing, fullness, sharp shooting pain, tenderness and tingling.

A common reason of pain in neck is tension or muscle strain. Normally, common activities are to blame. Such actions include turning and twisting the neck in a shocking way wile exercising, sleeping in an uncomfortable position, putting your computer monitor too low or too high, having poor posture while reading or watching television and bending over a desk for hours.

Falls or traumatic accidents can provoke severe neck injuries like paralysis, blood vessel injury, whiplash and even vertebral fractures. Other reasons include: cancer that involves the spine, infection of the spine (abscess, diskettes, osteomyelitis), narrowing of the spinal canal or spinal stenosis, small fractures to the spine from osteoporosis, ruptured disk, spondylosis or cervical arthritis and fibromyalgia.

It is generally not vital to decide the cause of a person´s pain in neck, particularly if the pain is minor. However, an assessment with a medical practitioner is suggested for anyone with a severe neck injury or head, if pain does not begin to improve after one week with treatment at home, changes or numbness in sensation in the legs or arms, severe pain and inability to control the bladder or bowels.

The assessment of pain in neck generally starts by watching the person´s ability to move the head to the right and left, side to side and backward and forward. The medical practitioner will watch the movement and position of the shoulders and neck. The health care provider will experience the muscles in the shoulders, upper back, head and neck to identify the areas tension and pain.
